Dive Type: Boat Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced Dangers: The dive can be deep (100 feet). Each diver should dive within their limits. Beware of surge which will be the strongest on top of the pinnacle. Dive Profile: Johnson Rock is the second largest rock pinnacle found south of Newport. The Rock lies southeast of the North Pinnacle and is easy to locate with a depth finder. On a low tide the top can be as shallow as 15 feet. Johnson Rock does not offer the sheer 60 ft walls that are characteristic of the North Pinnacle. Instead the terrain will rise and fall as small ridges slope downward to the ocean bottom at 100 feet. The ridges are separated by deep gullies and the walls are adorned with giant white anemones. The basalt pinnacle is perfect habitat for sea life, with deep holes and crevices offering a home to wolf eels and 30 pound lingcod. Johnson Rock is wonderful for sightseeing, photography, and spear fishing.
